Chris Hughton needs a long-term contract as Black Stars coach - Bashiru Hayford

Ghanaian tactician, Bashiru Hayford has urged the Ghana Football Association to maintain Chris Hughton as the Black Stars coach.

Hughton has come under serious criticisms after the Black Stars lost to Comoros in the second game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Moroni on Tuesday, November 21, 2023.

Comoros defeated Ghana 1:0 at the Omnisports Stadium to go top of the Group I table with six points.

Since the defeat to Comoros, some section of Ghanaians have been calling for the sack of Chris Hughton despite the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast fast approaching.

Speaking on Akoma FM in Kumasi, Bashiru Hayford who was linked to the Black Stars coaching job sometime ago, believes Chris Hughton deserve to continue as the Black Stars coach, stressing that the former Newcastle United manager must be given a long-term contract to rebuild the team.

“The problem with the Black Stars is not the coach, but rather a lack of teamwork. He should not be fired but must be given a long-term contract”, he said.

Ghana ended the first two games of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with three points after two matches, winning against Madagascar in Kumasi and a defeat to Comoros in Moroni.
