2026 FIFA WCQ: Comoros beat Ghana to go top of Group I

Comoros secured a 1:0 win against Ghana in the second game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers at the Omnisports Stadium on Tuesday, November 21, 2023.

Ghana went into the game as the favorite after beating Madagascar in Kumasi with Comoros also smashing Central African Republic in the first game at Moroni.

Ghana was determined to tame Comoros to surpass Mali to go top of the Group I table but the result went otherwise.

The Black Stars started the game on high confidence with Antoine Semenyo missing a one-on-one opportunity as early as the 6th minute.

On the 20th minute, Ghana goalkeeper Richard Ofori denied Comoros the opener with a brilliant save.

Jordan Ayew nearly broke the deadlock for Ghana but his header missed the post by inch.

Richard Ofori made another spectacular save in the 24th minute.

Comoros eventually broke the virginity of the game kind courtesy a brilliant goal from Myziane Maolida on the 43rd minute of the game.

Ghana returned from the recess to dominate possession, creating several opportunities for the equalizer.

Inaki Williams had a glorious opportunity to snatch the parity for Ghana but his header to a rebound went over the bar.

Ghana kept pressuring Comoros for the equalizer with coach Chris Hughton introducing Ernest Nuamah, Majeed Ashmeru and Mohammed Kudus into the game for Abdul Salis Samed, Antoine Semenyo and Andre Ayew.

Ernest Nuamah had his goal on the 65th minute ruled out for foul on the Comoros goalkeeper after a challenge.

On the 69th minute, midfielder Baba Iddrisu delivered a long-range shot which went over the bar.

Fatawu Issahaku came in for Jordan Ayew on the 80th minute while Jonathan Sowah also substituted Baba Iddrisu but all efforts went fruitless.

The victory has propelled Comoros to go top of Group I with six points after two matches while Mali sit second with four with Madagascar and Ghana boasting of three points each. Central African Republic have also had a point with Chad languishing at the bottom with no point after two matches.
