Richard Ofori should be Black Stars first-choice goalkeeper – Ali Jarah

Richard Ofori should be Black Stars first-choice goalkeeper - Ali Jarah

Former Ghana goalkeeper, Ali Jarah has called for Richard Ofori to be restored as the Black Stars first-choice goalkeeper.

Ghana has been struggling with the goalkeeping department since Richard Kingston retired in 2012.

After Kingston’s retirement, Ghana has tried several goalkeepers including Jojo Wollacott, Abdul Manaf Nurudeen, Lawrence Ati Zigi and Danlad Ibrahim.

Richard Ofori brought in stability when he was given the opportunity as the Black Stars goalkeeper but injuries hindered his progress.

The Orlando Pirates netminder has made a return to the Black Stars squad for 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Madagascar and Comoros but Lawrence Ati Zigi has managed to clinch the number one position.

But Ali Jarah believes Ofori has gathered enough experience and must be restored as the first-choice goalkeeper of the Black Stars.

“Left me alone, Richard Ofori should be our number one goalkeeper because he is tried and tested, we have tried him and he has understudied our former goalkeepers before becoming our number one goalkeeper”, Ali Jarah told Takoradi-based Connect FM.

“When Richard Kingston left, we had a problem with our goalkeeping department and Ofori brought stability. Let us not judge our goalkeepers with the friendly games we played.

“Once we have our number one and he is still around, we have to stop the try and error and bring him in and of he fails to live up to expectations, then we change him.

“The goalkeeping department is different from other departments and always need experience, like someone who can control the back four”, he added.

Ghana will host Madagascar at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in on Friday, November 17 before traveling to Moroni to play Comoros on Tuesday, November 21, 2023.
