George Boateng to takeover Black Stars coaching job if...

Assistant coach of the Black Stars, George Boateng could be named the interim gaffer should Chris Hughton be sacked as the head coach.

Hughton has been under severe criticisms following the Black Stars defeat to Mexico and USA during the October international break.

It has been widely reported in the local media that the 64-year old could be fired on Friday during a meeting with the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association.

Chris Hughton was appointed the Black Stars head coach in February 2023 following the resignation of Otto Addo after the Black Stars abysmal showdown at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Before his appointment, Hughton was serving as the Black Stars technical director under the tutelage of Otto Addo.

Since his appointment, the former Newcastle United manager has managed only seven matches, winning three, drawing two and losing two which even came against Mexico and USA during the October international break.

And with the Black Stars preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association believe Chris Hughton performance is not convincing enough to lead Ghana against Madagascar and Comoros in the qualifiers next week.

At this moment, it is believed that the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association are only waiting for approval from the government.

And should Hughton be sacked, his assistant coach George Boateng is expected to be given the job on interim basis.

Chris Hughton was expected to announce the Black Stars squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Madagascar and Comoros but the announcement has delayed due to a decision to sack him.
