Lionel Messi wins record-extending 8th ballon d'or

Inter Miami and Argentina superstar, Lionel Messi has won the 2023 ballon d’or award, extending his tally to an unprecedented eight time.

This was during the award ceremony in France on Monday, October 30, 2023.

Lionel Messi defeated competitions from Manchester City striker Erling Haaland and Paris Saint Germain talisman Kylian Mbappe to win the topmost award.

The 36-year old has been voted the ballon d’or winner after guiding Argentina to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and emerging as the second highest topscorer and the overall best player of the tournament.

Erling Haaland came second after scoring 52 goals to cushion Manchester City to a treble in 2022-23 league season. The Norwegian went home with the Gerd Muller Trophy given to the best striker of the year.

Aston Villa and Argentina netminder Emiliano Martinez also won the Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper while England and Real Madrid sensational midfielder Jude Bellingham pocketed the Kopa Trophy as the world’s top player under the age of 21…
