‘Time to win the 2023 AFCON’ – John Mahama to Black Stars

Ex-President John Dramani Mahama believes it is now the turn of the Black Stars to become African champions by lifting the 2023 AFCON title.

Mr. Mahama said, the team, having toiled through qualification and secured the berth among the participation teams, has what it takes to compete any country.

His statement comes after Ghana book a ticket to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Cote D’Ivoire with a 2-1 win over Central African Republic.

The Black Stars came from a goal down to achieve the feat on Thursday, September 7, 2023, in their last qualifiers at the Baba Yara Stadium.

The former president who were pleased with the team’s performance greeted the outcome of the game with applause, anticipating the same at the tournament proper.

He urged the team to continue upholding the flag of the country high and urged them to win the ultimate come next January.

“Congratulations to our Black Stars. Great come back from a goal down and a spectacular victory against CAR to book a well-deserved spot in the 2024 AFCON.

“You’ve made Ghana proud again! Keep shining! Let’s go for gold in the AFCON,” John Dramani Mahama said.

The leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) gave the charge on his Facebook page.

The qualification becomes the country’s 10th successive qualification to the continental showpiece since 2006 in Egypt.

Ghana, having last won the AFCON trophy since 1982 have gone 41-years without a trophy.
