Ghana seal AFCON qualification with comeback win over CAR

Ghana qualifies for its tenth straight AFCON

Ghana has confirmed their qualification to the 2023 African Cup of Nations after finishing on top of Group E with 12points with win over the Central African Republic (CAR)

Ernest Nuamah’s 87th minute goal helped the Black Stars beat the Central African Republicans in their last round qualifying match played at Baba Yara Stadium on Thursday evening.

The stars qualification berth was sealed with a 2-1 hard-fought win in the Ashanti Regional capital – Kumasi.

Central African Republic who put in a lightning display in the early stages of the game opened the scoring after a relentless start just 25th minutes of play.

The goal scored by 29-year-old Amiens SC attacker Louis Mafouta silent a noisy Baba Yara stadium leaving the fans speechless, but the celebration of the away side only lasted for 18 minutes.

With Baba Yara in silent voice, Mohammed Kudus, the West Ham United attacking midfielder send the Ghanaian fans into frenzy celebration giving them something to cheer on with a first half photo finish with the equalizer.

This was after the left footed player had scored from a world-class rehearsed free kick behind the penalty area in the 43rd minute after a miscalculation from goalkeeper Geoffrey Lembet.

The first half ended a 1-1 between the two sides as the resilient CAR defense managed to keep hold the Ghanaian attack despite some incursions by the attacking threat of the home team.

Coach Chris Hughton introduced fresh legs in the second half with Antoine Semenyo, Gideon Mensah, Ernest Nuamah, and Baba Idrisu in the second half.

The resounding moments for the four-time AFCON champions came in the last 10 minutes of the game after Antoine Semenyo had set up 19-year-old Nuamah to tap-in the ball through the middle of the away side goalpost.

Ghana continued to pile up their pressure and controlled proceedings for the remaining minutes ending the clash 2-1.

With today’s result Ghana finish on top of Group E with 12 points with Angola 9 points and the Central African Republic also on 7 whiles Madagascar finished at the bottom with 3 points.

Ghana’s qualification berth made them achieved a feat of participating in 10 straight AFCON tournaments since Egypt 2006 tournament.

The 2023 AFCON tournament will be hosted in Ivory Coast next January.
