Watch Chris Hughton explain why he invited Andre Dede Ayew

Head Coach of the Black Star, Chris Hughton has explained reasons for his inclusion of Andre Dede Ayew in the team for the Central African Republic clash.

According to technical head, the Black Stars captain services is needed hence his invitation.

Ghana host the Central African Republic (CAR) on Thursday, September 7, 2023, in the last round of matches of the qualifiers to the 2023 AFCON.

Chris Hughton ahead of the match invited 25-man squad which included skipper Andre Ayew who is currently clubless after the expiration of his contract with Nottingham Forest.

Some session of Ghanaians has been asking questions over why the skipper earn a call-up to the squad over some equally good players who were overlooked.

Reacting to the public call, Chris Hughton says he is not perturbed because the player in question is needed for the CAR encounter.

“There are players like Andre Ayew and he has to play this match – he’s our captain and I know what he gives to the squad with regards.

Everybody in the squad is not just about their abilities, its about what they bring to the squad … so everybody in the squad, there’s a reason and there will always be a debate about a member of the squad,” he explained in an interview monitored by


The match between Ghana and CAR will be played at the Baba Yara stadium in Kumasi.

Ghana currently top its Group comprising of Angola, CAR and Madagascar and needs a point to secure qualification to the continental showpiece to be hosted by Ivory Coast.
