‘I cried after my Black Stars call-up’ – Jonathan Sowah recounts

Sowah earns his first call-up to the Black Stars

Medeama Sporting Club’s striker, Jonathan Sowah, has recounted the turn of events after earning his call-up to the senior national team – the Black Stars.

According to the 24-year-old, he first cried upon receipt of a call confirming his invitation to the senior national team.

Sowah on Saturday, September 2, 2023, earned his maiden call-up to the Black Stars ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against the Central African Republic (CAR).

His immense contributions to Medeama having scored 12 goals in 18 matches made him earn a spot in Chris Hughton’s 25-man squad.

Jonathan Sowah finds himself in the esteemed company of notable forwards like Inaki Williams, Jordan Ayew and Antoine Semenyo.

His inclusion made him the second home-based player to recently earn a call-up under Chris Hughton’s watch – after former Bechem United talisman Hafiz Konkoni.

Speaking after Sunday’s champions of champions game against Dreams FC, Jonathan Sowah revealed that he was left in an emotional state where he couldn’t control his tears moment after his call-up was confirmed.

“I was in my room when I had the call and I was so happy, after the call, I started crying because this is a dream I had been waiting for,” he disclosed.

According to him, his emotions was driven from his long-standing dream-come-true coupled with his late mother’s prayer to see him donning the Black Stars jersey one day.

“This is a dream I had been waiting for and it is the dream my late mother had been praying for before her demise.”

He stressed out that he was going to leave no stone unturned at the Black Stars by showcasing his potentials when given the opportunity to play.

“When you get that opportunity, you need to show to the World for them to see what you have,” optimistic Sowah opined.

Barely 24-hours after his invitation, the Ghana Premier League winner on Sunday echoed his justification to be included in the Black Stars with a brace over Dreams FC to clinch the Super Cup for Medeama SC in the champions of champions clash.

Prior to that, he had scored the team’s only goal to beat Remo Stars of Nigeria at the Cape Coast where the goal proved crucial and apparently helping Medeama secure qualification to the next round of the 2023/24 CAF Champions League.

Jonathan Sowah played instrumental role in the sides historical feat of annexing the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League title – their first-ever league trophy.
