National Champ: Kwahu East Tafo JHS, Somanya Presby JHS to represent Eastern Region

The two best schools in the region will compete at the national level

Kwahu East Tafo Roman Catholic Junior High School (JHS) and Somanya Presby No. 2 (JHS) have qualified to represent the Eastern Region at the 2023 National Under 16 Basic Schools Championship in Accra.

The two schools, Kwahu East Tafo Roman Catholic will represent the region in the male’s category whiles Somanya Presby takes the spot for the females.

This was after they emerged champions in their various categories of the Eastern Region Basic Schools Championship in Koforidua at the U-16 level.

The newly constructed Astro Turf in Koforidua, Betom, in the New Juaben South Constituency, and the Sarkodie Astro Turf respectively were the venue used for the two-day tournament.

With the Roman Catholic JHS from Kwahu East Tafo humbling their opponent in the male finals, Somanya Presby Girls with their rich experience in the tournament proved their worth and beat Osino D/A JHS girls 9-0 to be crowned as the winners.

In the Under 13 category of the championship, Abuakwa South Akooko Presby Primary arose as champions after seeing off Kwahu West Ekawso Presby in the finals leaving the latter as runners up.

Denkyembour Deeper Life International and Upper Manya Akokomasisi M\A Primary came 3rd and 4th respectively in that order.

Participating schools and individual players were commemorated with items from sponsors (Indomie and Promasidor company) and trophies were awarded to the three (3) schools that became first at the end of the competition.

Awuku Isaac of Akooko Presby Primary won the Best Goalkeeper, Agborlosu Richard of Deeper Life International was shortlisted as the Most Valuable Player, and Kwasi Gabriel of Akokomasisi M/A crowned the top scorer at the end of the competition in the U-13.

Elsewhere, Brako Samuel who played an important role for Kwahu East, Tafo R/C JHS team to win the ultimate trophy scored four goals to win the top scorer award in the men under 16 championships.

The high feelings on the side of Akooko JHS Goalkeeper, Adena Isaac granted him the best goalkeeper, while Dankwa Jeff of Somanya Korm M/A was selected as the best player.

In the female category, Christiana Ashiaku of the champions – Somanya No.2 Presby was adjudged the best player of the tournament with her teammate Ruth Sackitey winning the best goalkeeper’s accolade.

Belinda Kpente who scored in sixth and seventh for the champions were also crowned the goalqueen at the end of the championship.

Having emerged as the 2022 runner-up in the maiden edition of the National Inter-Regional Basic Schools Championship which took place in Kumasi, Somanya Presby will hope to better their performance in the next edition owning to their rich experience.

Both Kwahu East Tafo Roman Catholic Junior High School and Somanya Presby No. 2 Junior High School will fight for a spot at the national level amid making it to the last two and book a ticket to CAF’ U-16 competition.

Head of Communications of Eastern RFA and a journalist with GBC Sunrise, General Manucho who filed the report described the year’s tournament outstanding and exceptional due to the exhibition of great talents to help fix the fundamentals of Ghana football.
