Vinicius missing as UEFA announces player of the year nominees

Vinicius Jnr excluded in UEFA player of the year nominees

Real Madrid talisman, Vinicius Jnr has shockingly missed out of the UEFA player of the year nominees announced on Thursday, August 17, 2023.

The Brazilian was pivotal for Real Madrid despite the team’s failure to defend the Spanish Laliga title and being eliminated from the Champions League by eventual champions Manchester City in the semifinal.

And despite his incredible form last season for Real Madrid, Vinicius Jnr who scored 23 goals with 22 assits was left out of the top ten nominees list with Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne making the top three.

Three players have been nominated for the UEFA’s Best Player award of the just concluded football year ( 2022/23).

The top three nominees were then voted for by a jury composed of the coaches of the clubs which played in the group stages of the 2022/23 UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League, together with the coaches of the men’s national teams of UEFA’s member associations.

Manchester City deadly attacker Erling Haaland was made his way to the final three following his record-breaking performance last season.

The Norwegian became the youngest and quickest player to make it to 35 Champions League goals in total. He was a key part in helping Manchester City winning the winners UCL medal alongside the Premier League, FA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.

Argentina superstar, Lionel Messi is one of the 2022/23 UEFA player of the year nominees for helping his former club, PSG to win the French ligue1 title and playing a pivotal role in winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Messi who is currently with Inter Miami in the MLS, became the first Argentinian to lift the World Cup since Diego Maradona, scoring seven goals in the process as he was awarded the Golden Ball for best overall player at the finals.

For Kevin De Bruyne, the 32-year-old was nominated for being the maestro in the midfield for Manchester City which aided the club to win a remarkable treble as the club secured its first Champions League triumph alongside their domestic double.

The winner of the award will be announced on the same day as the UEFA Champions League group stage draw ceremony, which will take place on Thursday 31 August, 2023, at the Grimaldi Forin in Monaco.

8. Marcelo Brozovic (Croatia & Inter, now at Al Nassr) – 20 points

9. Declan Rice (England & West Ham, now at Arsenal) – 14 points

10. Alexis Mac Allister (Argentina & Brighton, now at Liverpool) – 12 points

11. Jesus Navas (Spain & Sevilla) – 6 points
