Arsenal manager explains Partey’s right-back role against Forest

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta has explained why he played Thomas Partey at the right-back in league opener against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, August 12, 2023.

The Gunners emerged 2:1 winners in the cagey encounter with Thomas Partey lasting the entire duration of the game as the right-back instead of his favorite defensive midfield role.

Despite playing as the right-back, Partey was incredible and played a pivotal role in the team’s victory against Nottingham Forest.

Speaking after the game, Mikel Arteta explained that he payed the Ghanaian international as the right-back to have more fluidity and occupy certain spaces in relation to how they were defending.

“We expected a game that actually happened and we needed somebody else there in midfield to do what we have to do the best, and have more fluidity and occupy certain spaces in relation to how they were defending. I think it worked really well,” he said after the match.

Arsenal won the game with Ghanaian-born England forward Eddie Nketiah opening the floodgate in the 26th minute before Bukayo Saka added the second goal in the 32nd minute of the game.

Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi netted the consolation for Nottingham Forest in the 82nd minute.

The victory comes as huge boost for Arsenal who want to lift this season’s English Premier League title despite Manchester City’s incredible form.
