Chris Hughton says Ghana cannot afford to miss out on the next AFCON

Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton has underscored the significant of Ghana securing qualification to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted in Cote D’Ivoire in 2024.

Ghana leads Group E with 9 points from their four group games where they have picked two wins and three draws and need nothing but a win or draw to book a place at the tournaments.

Chris Hughton believes his side will leave no stone unturn when they host CAR to ensure that a qualification berth for the West African powerhouse is sealed.

The four-time African champions will host Central African Republic on September 4, 2023, at a yet to be decided venue in Ghana.

Speaking in an interview with UK-based outlet, talkSports monitored keenly by Getsportsgh.com, the gaffer admitted thou there are no minors in African football, Ghana cannot afford to miss out on the continental showpiece.

“We will play our last game in September at home to CAR and at the moment we top the group but it’s quite tight – we solely need a win or draw to guarantee our qualification.

So now is a vibrant and it’s a big game first, and Ivory Coast of course is the host of AFCON in January and then of course we very much need to be there,” he told the interviewer.

The Black Stars have not won an AFCON title since 1982. They last came close to winning it in 2015 however they lost out the title to Ivory Coast in a marathon shootout.

The 2023 AFCON will be staged in Cote D’Ivoire from January 13 – February 11, 2024.
