Over 2.5 billion people to watch 13th African Games

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif has disclosed that at least a targeted population of 2.5 billion Ghanaians and beyond are expected to patronise the 13th African Games to be hosted by the country from 8th -23rd March 2024.

He stated that the quoted figure is an estimation to be derived from audience view of the competition, both Television and Online.

Mustapha Ussif made this known at a press briefing held on Wednesday, 26th July 2023, at the Ministry of Information Press Centre in Accra.

In his address, the minister whiles elaborating on the benefits the country will gain in hosting the competition said the two weeks event will not only give the country social economic benefits but also financial benefits through audience viewing.

“For the two weeks period, Ghana is estimated to have over 2.5 billion TV and Online viewing audience,” and added that it will serve also as an avenue to “strengthening of the Ghana Cedi.”

He also ascribes to the direct investment inflows Ghana will be exposed to – construction of hotel and hostel facilities and recreational centres that will be hired to foreigners who will travel to the West African country to watch the prestigious competition.

The 13th edition of the African games initially slated for 4th to 19th August this year was postponed to 2024 after an agreement between the competition’s major stakeholders.

Ghana’s efforts to host the games was hampered due to an impasse over marketing rights involving the involving the African Union (AU), Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) and the Association of African Sports Confederations (AASC) who are the competition’s major stakeholders.

However, the impasse was resolved on the 19th of February in Addis Abba, Ethiopia and was facilitated by the President of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo.

As such, countries with their athletes and officials are expected to arrive in Ghana between March 5th to 7th, with the opening ceremony to take place the next day.

Whiles the competition ends on the 23rd of March, departure of athletes will then take effect on March 24.
